How to wear a lapel pin

Lapel pins are so much more than just wedding accessories. Whether you're adding one to your suit to make an impression at the office, or pairing it with a jacket and v-neck to wear on a date or night out, you'll be amazed at the number of compliments generated by this simple, affordable accessory.

Where to wear a lapel pin?

As a general rule, most people wear their lapel pin on the left-hand side, slightly under the collar point – but there’s no reason why you can't wear it on the right. It’s totally up to you.

The most common style of lapel pin remains the stick pin (pictured below) and, despite what you may have heard, there is no fixed rule as to whether the bottom of the pin should be visible or hidden behind the lapel.

Hiding the end of the pin is the more traditional way to wear it, but we think it looks much cooler to have the end of the pin on display, especially for smaller lapel pins.

How to put on a lapel pin?

As you can see from the below video, they’re pretty easy to put on.

*First, remove the bottom from the pin, exposing the sharp point (you may need to give it a good yank to get it off the first time).

*Next, feed the pin through the back of your lapel – you can either push it through the eye-shaped slit in your jacket known as the ‘button hole’, or push it through the fabric slightly below this so the pin sits slightly lower down your jacket (again, we would especially recommend this approach for smaller pins).

*Now, push the pin back through the front of fabric, and re-affix the bottom to hold the pin in place.
